Directions in Italian

Or "things to listen for when you're lost"

Imagine you're wandering through the tangled streets of Rome searching for the Colosseum.

It's mid-Summer... the sun is beating down, and your map is a flimsy thing from the hotel that has turned to tissue in your sweaty hands. You left your sunglasses at the hotel, you've just run out of water, and you're sure you're walking in circles because that fountain looks very familiar.

It might be a good time to ask for some directions.

Play
Scusi, mi può dire come arrivare al Colosseo?
Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the Colosseum?

Here are some of the replies you might hear.

Play
Gira a destra
Turn right
Play
Gira a sinistra
Turn left
Play
È qua vicino
It's close by
Play
È laggiù
It's over there
Play
È davanti alla scuola
It's opposite the school
Play
È dietro la stazione
It's behind the station
Play
È sotto il ponte
It's under the bridge
Play
È a fianco alla chiesa
It's next to the church
Play
È prima della stazione di servizio
It's before the gas station
Play
È dopo la gelateria
It's past the ice-cream parlor
Play
Se arrivi al ristorante "Le Quattro Stagioni" sei andato troppo lontano
If you arrive at the restaurant "Le Quattro Stagioni", you've gone too far

Note: These are not actual directions to the Colosseum!

Where is the bathroom?

Of all the travel phrases to master, this is likely one of the more important.

Play
Dov'è il bagno?
Where is the bathroom / toilet?

The answer can be any of the directions above (although hopefully not "È sotto il ponte"). If you're in a restaurant you may take some advice from a famous Italian song that says...

Play
"il bagno è sempre in fondo a destra"
"The bathroom is always down on the right"

Seems like a good place to start looking!
